For as long as i ve been talking about design in my personal and professional life the subject of whether rugs belong in the dining room or not just can t be settled.
Carpet under dining room table or not.
Ideally is the carpet to be around the table and chairs on each side in the same size.
In a dining room the rug should be large enough for the chairs as well as the table.
However all the legs of smaller pieces should be on the rug.
That being said a rug does help ground the dining table and can complete the look i don t think it s a necessity.
I used oversized office chair clear mats to place underneath the chairs my kids sat in.
Carpets should not be allowed to be in size less than the table with chairs.
The key is to make sure the chairs still sit comfortably on the rug when.
If you find the room you re in won t fit a rug of that size you re better off not having a rug at all.
A wide area of rug at least 24 inches should extend all the way around the dining table when all your guests are seated with the chairs tucked in.
If you ve opted for hardy and easy to clean flooring throughout your home add a really soft and luxurious rug underneath your dining table and enjoy the contrast of textures.
You ll want to center the rug under your dining table and then make sure it s big enough to accommodate all of the chairs.
This allows diners to comfortably move.
As you sit and enjoy your food you can gently rake your toes through the pile and not miss out on any of the elegance and opulence that an expensive carpet offers.
If you have high chairs or young kids and are wondering how to protect the carpet under the dining room table i hope this helps.
If there is a the commode in the dining room the carpet should reach to the middle of the space between the chairs and chests of drawers not underneath it.
In a living room for instance all of the furniture should be on top of the rug.
We have a rug under the dining table over our hardwood floors but we have an open plan living dining room area and a rug in each space helps to define each area and ground the dining table.
There are pros and cons for each and it would appear that people do not straddle on both sides of the issues they are adamant one way or another.
Also the floors are cold in the winter and the rugs help soften noise in the high ceilinged space.
Better to let your dining room rug dream go then to get one that looks dwarfed under your dining table.
If this isn t possible it s okay to have the front legs of major upholstered pieces on the rug and the back legs off.
Pattern colour is key.
I think it s a personal choice not necessarily a must have one commenter wrote on a houzz forum dedicated to the design dilemma.
